Microbiomes are the producers and modulators of the host metabolism and homeostatic machinery. Changes in the composition of the microbiome can have a direct impact on the metabolic capacities within the GI tract. It can affect the molecules present within it, their transition through the epithelial barrier, and the bioavailability to host cells. Researchers, in this study, observed that the microbes differentially alter the levels of specific metabolites depending on the presence of certain taxa. In addition, age and sex modulated the effects of the microbiome on metabolism. Leveraging microbe-metabolite-host interactions towards personalized medicine holds great promise for improving health and preventing disease.
