Scientists at Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard explored the changes in microbiomes of mother and a child after birth. This is the first study to uncover large-scale “horizontal gene transfer” events between different species of maternal and infant gut bacteria, revealing that it is an ongoing process throughout the first year of life. Donor bacterial strains were shown to share their genes without colonizing the baby’s gut. https://lnkd.in/dxiqHM7T
