The human immune system and the microbiota co-evolve, and their balanced relationship is based on crosstalk between the two systems through the course of life. Gut microbiome plays an important role in modulating host-immune system and impacts its to vaccination. Microbiota could be a source of natural adjuvants that modulate the degree of innate and adaptive immune responses. The intestinal microbiome may affect the efficacy of vaccines through Pathogen-associated molecular patterns, Microbiota-derived metabolites, and Microbial epitopes. The authors in this study, discuss the link between vaccine-induced immune responses and the gut microbiota which could provide crucial insights for designing effective personalized preventive and therapeutic vaccination strategies along with insights on the possibility of microbiota acting as a vaccine adjuvant.
