💡 The relationship between gut microbiota (GM) and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) has been explored in this study.

📌 This study first explored the longitudinal change of GM in HDP patients during pregnancy, found the differential GM, and detected the causal association. The findings may promote the prevention and treatment of HDP from the perspective of GM and provide valuable insights into the pathogenesis of HDP.

In this nested case–control study, they utilized a follow-up cohort to investigate the GM profiles at three key time points during pregnancy.

📍 Methods:

They conducted 16S rRNA sequencing of GM DNA from 197 stool samples, comprising 46 HDP patients and 30 healthy controls. Samples were collected at early, middle, and late stages of pregnancy.

📌 They performed diversity and LEfSe analysis to identify differential microbial taxa. Additionally, a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was employed to establish the causal relationship between 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 and pre-eclampsia (PE).

Diversity Analysis: The alpha and beta diversity of GM in HDP did not exhibit significant differences, suggesting that it is specific microbial taxa rather than overall diversity that influence HDP.

Differential Microbial Taxa: They identified differential microbial genera during various stages of pregnancy. Notably, certain genera like 𝘗𝘰𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴, 𝘗𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 exhibited significant associations with blood pressure levels, supporting their potential role in HDP.

MR Analysis: 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳, a GM genus, was found to be negatively correlated with PE. This association remained significant after adjusting for confounding factors, highlighting the potential of 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳 as a target for HDP prevention and treatment.
